What are the requirements for using a foreign birth or marriage certificate in Bulgaria?

The document must bear an original Apostille issued in the country of origin, unless that country has a bilateral legal assistance agreement with Bulgaria. It must also be translated into Bulgarian by a sworn translator in Bulgaria.

Where is the TBS Tradix office located in Sofia, and how can documents be submitted?

Our office is located in central Sofia. Documents can be submitted:

  1. In person at our office.
  2. By courier, including Econt, Speedy, DHL and others.
  3. Online by email for written translations that do not require the physical legalization of the original document.
How long does document legalization take in Bulgaria?

Processing times depend on the institution and the type of service requested:

  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs: from 12 hours for an express service to 4 working days for a standard service.
  • Ministry of Justice: 3–4 working days.
  • NACID (educational documents): 2–4 working days.
What is the difference between a sworn translation and the legalization of a document with an Apostille?

The difference lies in the document’s legal validity and the level of certification involved:

  • Sworn translation: The translation is completed by an authorised sworn translator registered with the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The translator certifies the accuracy of the translation with their signature and the translation agency’s stamp.
  • Legalization with an Apostille: This is a procedure that certifies the authenticity of the original document through the issuance of an international certificate known as an Apostille by the competent authority.
